Staff Picks   1 - 15 of 73 Matched Records

We experienced clerks have seen it many times before. The glassy-eyed, "too-many-choices" stare. The shuffling in the aisles like something from an early George Romero movie. "Help me," these creatures plead, "please help me choose a movie and just...get...home."

Next time, just print out Staff Picks for the month and bring it in with you. You'll even have the energy left to pick up your pint of ice cream on the way home. We'll change our picks on here on a regular basis, so check back whenever you need a suggestion. And feel free to discuss a recommendation with the clerk who chose it.

Affair Of Love DVD  2000  Frederic Fonteyne  --Christine
Affair Of Love VHS  2000  Frederic Fonteyne  This film is erotic with very little sex and romantic with very little romance.--Christine
Arizona Dream VHS  1994  Emir Kusturica  Though Arizona Dream is Yugoslav Emir Kusturica's first film on this continent, the dream of the title is a distant relation to the American Dream. It's more the dream of the mystic: transcendent, nocturnal, and ecstatic Launched by an opening sequence set in Alaska-complete with Eskimos, huskies, and an emblematically mercurial flat fish, the work has a lyric absurdity that won't sit still. An only slightly post-adolescent Johnny Depp and a well-aged Faye Dunaway-unpainted and full of feral passion-become fools for love and other impossible dreams in a world grounded by the "saner" likes of Vincent Gallo, Jerry Lewis and a devoutly suicidal Lili Taylor. The five player-narcissistic, amoral, exuberant and, in the hands of Kusturica, surreally in each others' faces-turn in the ensemble performances of their careers. A small and giddy tragi-comedy in form, Arizona Dream is orchestral in spirit: Instead of laying music over imagery, Kusturica weaves it into a restlessly majestic rhythym of light-and-dark, repeated poetic detail, camera movement, facial expression, and ambient sound. The film offers a rare and almost private experience: the mid-sleep revelation one sometimes gets when visited by a dream whose vividness is matched by its strangeness. --David Goodale (Customer)
Blow Out DVD  1981  Brian DePalma, Brian De Palma  Brian DePalma's operatic and hallucinatory film comments not only on his early career focus of trying to find "the perfect scream" but also adds to the canon of movies which looked underneath the shiny America of the Reagan years. John Travolta, Nancy Allen, John Lithgow and Dennis Franz are just about perfect. --Tom

California Split VHS  1974  Robert Altman  If you like "The Long Goodbye," this is Altman in the same vein. Could anybody but Elliott Gould be so great in this? Aren't he and George Segal a beautiful pair?--Meg
